Hot truths...Living in the Heat

This is what our temps have been like for a week now.

We're in the middle of a heat dome now in Northern California, and folks, IT IS HOT.

Hotter than hot. It’s an inferno here.

We can see now that climate change is changing the way we live.

Just this week, my friends in Colorado, Helene, and Dave Van Manen, have been watching a wildfire from their backyard, just three miles away. They can see the flames and smoke and have their car packed and ready with important documents in case they have to evacuate. CLICK HERE to read their story. They've included photos and a treat at the end of the article.

This is how many people live now, especially in the West.

It's real, and it's scary.

It will get worse. I don’t know about you, but it leaves me with that helpless feeling in the pit of my stomach.

It's the same with Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan, a place we rarely hear about in the news where there's violence against women and girls. Forced child marriages and rape are rampant. And let’s not even mention the nightmare of our political system and the recent Supreme Court decisions.

But who wants to hear that? I don’t, yet it’s always running in the background.

It wrecks my soul to think about the suffering.

And then I try not to think about everything, not knowing what to do. Then I feel guilty.

I wonder how to help; I realize it’s too overwhelming and too big. Whether it’s climate change, suffering in the world, or the screwed-up politics we’ve got going on... no wonder if our brains are fried. No wonder we try to ignore it.

All that said...rather than ruining your day as you read this, I invite you to focus on a few things that might be right for you:

  • Choose to take care of yourself so that when the time comes, you have the bandwidth to do whatever you are personally able to do to help our world and others.
  • Talk to others about climate change. Keep the conversation going. That’s how new ideas emerge and how we support each other to influence our elected leaders.
  • Vote and tell everyone you know to vote.
  • Donate to places like the Red Cross, Doctors without Borders, or NGOs working directly in these regions where there's so much suffering and violence.
  • Some of us will empower women and marginalized groups.
  • Some will reduce your carbon footprint and support measures for green initiatives.
  • Others will focus on advocating for peace and human rights.
  • Whatever you choose is your best way to contribute to the world, do that.
  • Be grateful. Wake up and say thank you EVERY DAY.
  • Yeah, the heat has me fired up (no pun intended 😭). I’m even more committed to not waiting…not waiting to live fully and contributing wherever possible.

This is why I’m always talking about self-care and letting go of self-doubt.

You are unique and can find your way to contribute. The world needs you to be the best version of yourself.

Over to you:

What solutions do you have? How do you take care of yourself now?

Sending you cool breezes and a warm heart,

Jo ❤️
