Here in the US, we’re less than a week away from Thanksgiving. It’s the time when we're supposed to be thankful for all "our blessings."Â
For people who have been to hell and back this year, for those who’ve lost a loved one, for those who have had their hearts ripped out and stomped on, it can be an insensitive thing to hear the words...what are you grateful for?Â
If you're someone who's had a gut-wrenching year, I can imagine that you’re thinking...I don’t have anything to be grateful for.Â
There's been too much heartbreak this year...the unexpected loss of a loved one, the breakup of a marriage, the dramatic ending of a relationship that you didn’t agree to, the exasperation of working a job where the risk is high for covid and with minimal appreciation, the devastating loss of your house to a fire, and on and on.Â
It’s easy to think...life has knocked me down and everyt...
"Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars. You have to let go at some point in order to move forward."
C S Lewis
I’m always shocked a bit when I realize that we’re so close to the end of another year. It’s like suddenly there’s talk about what to have for Thanksgiving dinner and what will Christmas be like.
As we inch closer to December 31, we have choices we can make.Â
We get to decide how we want the rest of the year to go and how to finish it up.Â
And how we want to enter into the new year.Â
Whether it's been the toughest year of your life or you've been able to sigh and say, well, it wasn't that bad compared to 2020, I want you to pause for just a second.
And think about the hard parts of 2021.Â
Before we can move on to the next step, we have to let go.
It sounds easy, simple. Right?
But when you have a broken heart or you feel crushed by a huge sucker punch life has given you, it is NOT EASY to let go.Â
Yet I think we know that if we aren’t ca...
The answer to your best life might be surprising.
We all know it's not about having gobs of money, although having your basic needs met is crucial.Â
Yet in this world where people are stressed, anxious, and not happy in jobs that are way too stressful and demanding, it's time to do what we can do and take ultra good care of ourselves. This is what makes an ordinary life the best life.
We live in a world where we don't know what will happen with the pandemic or the climate crisis. It's a crazy time in history and by many predictions, it will get worse.Â
So...here's the deal.Â
There are way too many things out of our control.Â
We can choose to start loving ourselves so that we can be resilient and contribute to helping figure out how to help in our own unique way.Â
When we let go of how we think life has to be and really believe in ourselves we have freedom.Â
“If you let go a little, you will have a little peace; if you let go a lot you will have a lot of peace; if you let go completely you will have complete peace." Ajahn ChahÂ
When I heard this quote the very first time, it stopped me dead in my tracks.Â
I knew it was true.
But I didn’t have much experience with letting go. Â
I come from a family who loved to keep things. Everything, actually.Â
There wasn’t a whole lot that got thrown away. Letters, old bank statements and checks for years and years, clothes that no longer fit, even empty boxes...because, well, the idea was that we might need these things SOMEDAY.
And yes, my parents were of the Depression-era. I get it.
It was a time that affected that generation for their entire lives and my parents and grandparents were deeply impacted along with everyone else. They didn’t believe in getting rid of anything.Â
So I grew up with the mentality of keeping things, unaware and unsuspecting that I thought the same way. I didn’t re...
Today I had this imaginary conversation with a friend or (maybe it was myself.) It went like this:Â
Hey Amelia,
Did you know that that blah mood you're in is normal?
And that you're not the only one?
Did you know that you've been feeling tired because your brain is tired?
Yes ma’am it is.
It's worn out from trying to cope with covid, with fires out of control, smoke, political upheaval, along with all the day-to-day stressors you have and it's been going on now for over a year. Â
You didn't notice anything at first because you were too busy adjusting, putting on your mask, avoiding crowds, staying inside.
You didn't realize that your brain was on overdrive trying to keep you and your family alive.
Yep. It was over a year without going anywhere except maybe to the grocery store. And you woke up most days thinking...it's another day of the same. The same. The boring old same freakin' thing.
You didn't know how long it would last eith...
"Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek."
Barack Obama
Today is about not putting your life on hold and waiting to do the things you love.
If we don't live the life we want now or we're waiting to be happy, then we die full of regrets. I am a woman living in my 70s so I ask myself every day, what am I waiting for?
Is it when the bills are paid off, you have enough money, the kids leave home when you have more time?...you fill in the blanks.
We wait for the "right" time. For the best job, for the next raise, the perfect house, the best time to do what we want.Â
My 13-year-old grand-nephew was diagnosed 4 months ago with a brain tumor. It was malignant. The day before he was diagnosed he was a normal kid playing baseball.
One minute you could be sitting on your backyar...
"When our souls are tired, we don't need sleep, we need to get away and just be.”
It happens to all of us. We push and push and grind, and the truth is, we don't always take the best care of ourselves. Soul exhaustion creeps up, and then it's time to address our self care in a big way.
Have you ever felt a weariness that seems to seep into your very bones?
It's a kind of exhaustion that sleep alone can't cure because it's a profound sense of fatigue that envelopes your entire being.
Even a full night's sleep can leave you feeling drained of energy and lacking motivation. Excitement for life feels far from grasp.
It's a scenario many of us are all too familiar with. Some call it "soul tired."
When we're exhausted, our body is working hard to just keep up with the daily tasks. When our brains are tired, we can't put anything else in.
This is where I was. Totally blah. Tired and wired. Sick of everything. No pizazz. Dull.
